» BRAZIL CARNIVAL
Brazil is renowned for its hedonism, beaches and world famous carnivals. The country's other side is a massive underclass created by unequal distribution of wealth.
This former Portuguese colony consists of 26 states in five distinct regions, plus the capital, Brasilia, which is a federal district. The south-east, home to mega-cities Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro , is the most developed; Bahia in the north-east has an African flavour while the extreme south has European influences. There is abundance of natural attractions include the Amazon river, the flora and fauna of the northern rainforests, Iguazu Falls in the south and the Pantanal wetlands in the south-west. Eco tours are popular, but too often economics wins over. The greatest threats are logging and human encroachment on the Amazon, illegal trade of flora and fauna, and the destruction of natural ecosystems. There are fewer than 330,000 Brazilian Indians, over half of whom live in the jungle. Over 200 animals and 100 plant species are in danger of extinction.

RIO CARNIVAL
To visit the city in the Carnival period and to watch to so called "the biggest show in the planet", the parade of the samba schools in the "Sambódromo". It's a spectacle with colors, music and unforgettable and involving rhythm. Carnival Rio takes place during the 5 day up to Ash Wednesday, with the last day of Carnival falling on Shrove Tuesday. Although the most famous events during the 5 days of Carnival are the Rio Carnival, events celebrating Carnival take place all over the country.

Bahia State
Bahia, hosts one of the biggest and best carnivals in the world. The carnival brings out the best of Afro-Brazilian music and dance and the spectacle of the religious groups, known as Afoxé societies, is one of the most striking elements of the celebration.

One of the more renowned groups are the Filhos de Gandhi, or sons of Gandhi. Dressed in the white tunics and blue turbans of their West African ancestors, these members make up one of the many Afro Blocos. Members can number in the hundreds. Hearing such tight syncopated drumming with catching rhythms will make not dancing an effort!

Trios Electricos
- large bands that play music close in style to the Afro Blocos through enormous sound systems - dominate the floats, so if percussion, Latin music or just letting your hair down is your thing, then head down to Brazil!
